Office of Financial Empowerment

The Office of Financial Empowerment (OFE) manages existing and launching new financial empowerment programs and initiatives. This office serves as the City of Jackson’s internal financial empowerment consultant, brings financial stability lens to a range of related issues, and leverages its leadership role to ensure financial empowerment is central to local anti-poverty efforts.

The purpose of the Office of Financial Empowerment is to expand access to safe and affordable credit and banking products, increase access to one-on-one financial counseling and coaching services, expand community wealth-building strategies, and identify policy and programmatic barriers to improving financial stability.

Greater Jackson Financial Empowerment Center

Greater Jackson Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) offers professional, one-on-one financial counseling at no cost to all Jackson and West Tennessee residents (18 years +). There are no income or program requirements for service. Clients will work with a certified financial counselor to improve their financial stability and achieve their goals. Services include creating a budget, legacy planning, managing finances, increasing savings, maximizing cash flow, establishing/building credit, managing debt, connecting with safe and affordable banking services, and more. The FEC is a program of the City of Jackson administered by United Way of West TN.

The Jackson Debt Defeater Campaign

Take control of your finances this September and October. The City of Jackson Office of Financial Empowerment has partnered with local financial institutions to help you pay down debt, build savings, and earn real rewards along the way.

How It Works:

  • Step 1: Get in the Door — Complete a free, confidential 1-on-1 counseling session in September or October to receive your first incentive.

  • Step 2: Make the Plan — Pull your credit report and recieve a custom debt action plan with a certified counselor.

  • Step 3: Hit the Milestone — Reduce your target debt by 10% or resolve a collection account within 9 months to earn an exclusive T-shirt, up to a $100 savings match, and an entry into our $1,000 cash grand prize drawing!

Additional Resources

Free, virtual tool that screens users for unclaimed public benefits. State residents can text “Benefits” to 211-211 to receive a free screener, which can be completed in several minutes. Afterward, users will immediately receive notice of eligible tax credits/benefits, along with links to apply for those benefits.
